My Coach knows what he is talking about. If I listen to him, the result is usually good, but if I don’t, the result is something else… Like yesterday. It’s been quite hot and windy here in Fresno. Yesterday was the steeplechase race, and I had only one thing in my mind: to get the Regional Qualifier, no matter what. Coach told me to stay in the pack until the last kilometer and then run for the win, but I didn’t want to take a risk of running a slow time that wouldn’t be enough to qualify. So I kept my mind and paced the entire race, until the wind was too much, and 500m before the finish I just couldn’t find the second gear anymore. I finished second, which was disappointing, and ran a time of 10.14, which was even more disappointing, though it was enough to get to run in the Regional meet in a couple of weeks. What annoys me the most is that I didn’t feel too exhausted in the finish, but I just couldn’t pull the kick anymore. If I had listened to my Coach, I probably could have run a faster time and even win the race. But I have to be grateful that I got to race after the health problems I had during the past couple of weeks. And it was fun!! I will still compete in 5k today, we will see how that ends up..! I am ready to run faster in the Regionals and hopefully qualify to the Nationals, too….

4.28,76 for 1500m was a disappointment, even though it was just 0.09 seconds off from my PR. Why? Because I know I could have done so much better. My workouts have been fast and I know it is inside me. But in the race, I was afraid to go for it early enough. The pace felt easy but I knew the girls I was running against had PRs so much faster than mine, so a tiny voice in my head told me I wasn’t supposed to beat them. I made a move just 500m before the finish line, but it was too late. I felt fresh after the race, and I was mad at myself… And then I did a long cool down to actually cool down my anger.. However, if I look the positive side, at this point of the season I’m running a 1500m time that has been usual in the previous seasons when I have been peaking – that means the best is yet to come!

Next weekend it’s Payton Jordan and finally I get to steeple!

Photos from MW Champs that were held in Albuquerque, New Mexico this weekend. Finished my short indoor season with two top3 finishes (1. in 5k and 3. in 3k) and now it feels nice to move the gaze towards the approaching outdoor season when one has some bling around her neck – ha! Racing in altitude is still strange to me (Albuquerque is at ~ a mile high) and I am trying to accept the fact that the times are much slower. The races were rather tactical than speedy, but it was nice to try new ways to race. I am satisfied with the victory at the 5k but disappointed with the result after yesterday’s 3k: altitude, doubling, and my race tactic were all bit too much and I was unable to respond when the move was made. However, I accept that there were two girls stronger than me yesterday, and remember that I was the strongest on Friday. So happy for my teammate (& future roomie♡) Brenna who got 2. in the 5k and 2. in the 3k! Overall, we had a really good weekend with several great performances, Go Broncos!! Even though I raced indoors in the middle of training and without actual tapering, it feels good to get a short break from racing and get some good weeks of training in before the first track meets on April.

Happy National Pancake Day Everyone! I am just going to make a nice stack of pancakes for breakfast….;)

My Coach said I could run 15.50-16.10 in my indoor opener. 5k was an odd distance for me, it was my first track meet since forever (last summer), and I had never ran that fast. It was exciting and scary. But I wanted to believe in him.

I ran 16.09,36. It’s a new PR by 33 seconds. It’s also a new Finnish National Indoor Record. It’s the 7th fastest time in the NCAA at the moment. It’s a good time, but not something I should be too satisfied with. I know I can do so much better! I ran this race in the middle of training season without actual speed work, so I’m pretty excited how fast I can go when the season progresses. I really want to run sub-16, and I know I can do it!

I feel strong and happy. My training has been consistent and the results start to show it. Somebody believed in me and made me believe in myself too. I want to run fast and be one of those top girls out there! I’m so lucky to have these amazing people around me. Thanks Coaches. Thanks Team. Thanks Trainers.

By the way, I think my Coach knows what he is talking about.

After fighting against health problems the past few weeks, the 5th place finish in Regionals tasted pretty good – I’m officially back! What’s more, the Broncos captured an auto bid to the Nationals next weekend when we finished second (Oregon won by 1 point!!!). So proud of my team mates and grateful to be a part of a team this strong: not only did our homegirl Allie win the whole race, but also we had three girls in top5 (I, Allie, and Brenna, who finished 4th just in front of me). What’s even more exciting is that the men’s team also earned a spot in the Nationals, so we will all travel together to Louisville next week. It’s going to be so much fun!

Well, the celebration was cut short as when we returned back home there was a bunch of homework as well as a math exam waiting for me. This weekend has been super hard and I’m glad that the Thanksgiving break is just around the corner…

Have a great evening !

It’s not about me – it’s about the team. I wish to forget the past and move on. All the failures can be very important lessons. In the long run, all these hardships can be blessings in disguises. This weekend I’m bleeding blue for my fellow Broncos. No matter how much it hurts, no matter if I can breath or not – we are all in this together. I will give my everything. We have the work to do. I choose not to be afraid.
